The NTMed New Medical Technology Cluster was created
The cluster of New Medical Technologies NTMed was created. It was joined by 15 entities from the area of medical devices, pharmacy and biotechnology. The agreements were signed at the CEZAMAT Center for Advanced Materials and Technologies of the Warsaw University of Technology during the “Innovations for Health” conference held there.
Joining the NTMed cluster gives the opportunity to develop innovative solutions in the field of medicine and pharmacy thanks to the cooperation of enterprises, the Warsaw University of Technology and the research center, CEZAMAT WUT.
– The level of innovation in health in Poland can compete with some of the solutions that are being developed in the United States or European Union countries – said Mariusz Wielec, Director of CEZAMAT WUT, during the ceremony of signing the agreements. “I believe we are on an upward curve when it comes to innovation in both medical devices and medicines,” he added.
Industries that create solutions for healthcare are at the forefront when it comes to the development of innovation in Poland. The launch of the NTMed cluster aims to intensify the cooperation of all entities associated in it.
– It is also important to achieve a critical mass that will allow us to talk seriously with institutions that have funds allocated for innovation, as well as, for example, to stay in dialogue with regulators – explained director Wielec.
Conference participants pointed out that we are dealing with two groups of innovative solutions. The first concerns medical technologies in which the financial threshold for entering the market is relatively lower. The second one – the pharmaceutical sector, in which it takes up to 12 years – as indicated by Marta Winiarska, President of the Polish Association of Innovative Medical Biotechnology Companies BioInMed – for a new drug to be developed. In both, it is necessary to obtain funds for their development and introduction to the market, and this cannot be done without the support of state funds, because business is not able to bear the research risk on its own with such high costs of innovation. In the case of drugs, they are the highest.
Panelists discussing at the conference organized by CEZAMAT Warsaw University of Technology pointed to the development of the domestic pharmaceutical sector – Poland is one of Europe’s leading producers of generics, i.e. generic drugs – said Marcin Czech, president of the Polish Pharmacoeconomic Society. – The creation of “second generation” drugs requires many years of work, and we go from generics through micro-innovations, production of biosequence drugs to innovative drugs, which I believe will appear soon – he said.
During the “Innovations for Health” conference, the activities of the NTMed cluster of New Medical Technologies were initiated. The cluster will support technology transfer in the field of medicine and pharmacy. CEZAMAT PW concluded agreements with entities operating in the sector of medical devices and medicinal products.
