Project

Prototyping platform for silicon nitride photonics integrated circuits

Description

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are planar optoelectronic systems that integrate multiple photonic components on a common substrate. PICs have several significant advantages compared to their counterparts built of discrete components, such as: small size, high reliability, high mechanical resistance, stability of operating parameters, resistance to vibrations, the ability to stabilize temperature, low demand for electricity and low unit cost at mass production. Currently, the applications of photonic integrated circuits can be divided into four main areas: telecommunications and data transmission, sensors and the Internet of Things, automotive and aerospace, and biomedicine. The aim of the project is to develop a prototyping service for photonic integrated circuits in the silicon nitride material platform for the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum. As part of the work carried out so far at the Center for Advanced Materials and Technologies CEZAMAT WUT, the following basic functional blocks have been developed: waveguides, MMI couplers, AWG multiplexers, ring resonators, Mach-Zehnder interferometers, grating couplers and microfluidic interfaces. The further extension of the library with a thermo-optical modulator is planned as a part of the project.

The result of the work will be the offer for prototyping service of the silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits based on layouts designed by the client. Thus, competences related to designing and research on integrated photonics, acquired for several years at the Warsaw University of Technology, will be extended to standardized manufacturing processes. As part of the project, knowledge and know-how on the full production cycle of integrated photonics for the visible range will be expanded, which will allow the preparation of the first commercially available integrated photonics platform for this spectral range in Poland.
